In 2004, Pastor Philip Esinyen and his wife envisioned a support system for the people of Turkana East suffering from eye diseases. Many of these ailments were linked to inter-community raids, where gunpowder from gunfire often entered the eyes of the combatants. This urgent need drew the attention of donors, including Fred Hollows, who lent their support to the initiative. Over time, additional pressing issues, particularly food insecurity, were identified, prompting efforts to mobilize the community towards agricultural ventures while concurrently supporting ongoing projects like the Morulem irrigation scheme.
As a result, the Ngitunga Community-Based Organization (CBO) continued to grow until Pastor Philip and his wife transitioned into full-time ministry with AIC Kenya. During a challenging period of nearly eight years of stagnation, our CEO Ekeno took the initiative to revitalize the organization, which was re-registered as APIR Turkana in 2017. Since then, APIR has expanded its portfolio to encompass at least eight thematic areas, established an effective board, and implemented active policies. Additionally, a permanent office has been established at the address below. At that time, both Philip and Sarah were healthcare professionals, with Sarah working as a nurse and Philip serving as Turkana’s medical officer. Through their initiatives and subsequent funding, they have made significant progress in addressing the health and welfare needs of the community.

At APIR-TURKANA, our mission focuses on EIGHT interrelated thematic areas that tackle the urgent challenges confronting marginalized and vulnerable communities. Each area plays a vital role in advancing our overarching goal of promoting resilience, equity, and inclusivity:
We champion gender development by addressing systemic barriers and harmful norms that hinder women's and girls' progress. Our programs are designed to empower women as leaders, decision-makers, and community contributors. We promote gender-sensitive policies and initiatives that reduce disparities and ensure equal opportunities for all.
Access to Education, Skills Development, Financial Inclusion, Food security, sustainable livelihoods and resilience. We focus on building the self-reliance of girls, women, and youth by enhancing access to economic opportunities, vocational training, and livelihood development programs. By promoting entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and income-generating activities, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and create sustainable, thriving communities.
Through targeted advocacy and community mobilization, we amplify the voices of marginalized groups and champion their rights. We support social protection measures and human rights awareness campaigns to address injustices, ensure access to services, and protect the most vulnerable from exploitation, violence, and discrimination.
In times of crisis, APIR-TURKANA provides life-saving support, including WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) interventions, food distribution, and medical relief. Our rapid response and recovery efforts prioritize the needs of displaced and vulnerable populations, ensuring dignity and safety during emergencies.
We recognize the urgent need to address climate challenges, particularly in regions prone to environmental degradation and extreme weather events. Our interventions focus on community-led climate adaptation, sustainable resource management, and awareness campaigns that build resilience and mitigate the impacts of climate change.
APIR-TURKANA actively works to promote peace and resolve conflicts through dialogue, mediation, and capacity-building initiatives. We focus on fostering coexistence, reducing inter-community tensions, and strengthening local mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution.
We are committed to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children, particularly those at risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation. Through sponsorship programs, advocacy, and community engagement, we strive to provide children with access to education, healthcare, and opportunities to realize their full potential.
- Health Governance: Strengthening health systems through participatory approaches that empower marginalized communities—including women, youth, and vulnerable groups—to have a voice in decision-making processes related to health services.
- WASH Governance: Enhancing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services by fostering community involvement in the management and governance of WASH systems, particularly in underserved regions. This includes maintaining water sources, drilling for clean water, and ensuring sustainable water supply in facilities used by vulnerable populations.
- Climate Governance: Mitigating the impacts of climate change by building local capacities for participation in climate resilience and adaptation initiatives, and integrating climate-smart practices into governance frameworks.
- Gender Equality and Social Inclusion: Promoting the rights of women, girls, and youth by advancing gender equity across all governance sectors, ensuring their perspectives and needs are prioritized in health, WASH, and climate initiatives.
